John Currie (Enniskillen, Ireland) will long remember his first collegiate goal, as he tallied the match-winner in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer victory at Brevard College Saturday afternoon. Six of Wingate’s seven 2012 victories have been one-goal triumphs.
Wingate is the number four team in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings. The Bulldogs have won five matches in a row, including three consecutive contests by identical 2-1 tallies. Wingate is 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Brevard is 1-7-2 overall and 1-3 in the SAC.
“Obviously, we are very happy with the victory,” Wingate head coach
Gary Hamill says. “We dominated the game statistically, but we couldn’t find the back of the nets.”

Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had two assists for the visitors. On Currie’s match-winner, Lima’s free kick pass found Currie for the score in the 88th minute. Lima leads the 2012 Wingate team with four assists.

Corey McCollom (Monroe, N.C.) gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage in the 60th minute when he converted a header from a Lima assist. Brevard sophomore forward
Marcelo Betcer (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tied the contest 1-1 in the 82nd minute on a penalty kick.
The Bulldogs outshot the Tornados 18-5 with a 6-3 margin in shots on goal. Wingate had 10 corner kicks to one for Brevard. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper
Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Ontario) earned his seventh victory of the season, collecting two saves. Brevard junior goalkeeper
Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, Finland) also went 90 minutes. He recorded four saves.
“This is not an easy trip for us,” Hamill says. “The coaching staff believes this is a sign of a good team…overcoming adversity, making adjustments and picking up a win.”
Both teams return to SAC play Saturday, Oct. 6. Wingate hosts Lincoln Memorial at 7 p.m., while Brevard visits Lenoir-Rhyne at 7:30 p.m.
