Hayley Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia) posted a career-high 27 points to lead the Wolves to a 74-66 South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball overtime victory over Wingate University Wednesday night in Eleazer Arena. Lepaio added a team-best nine rebounds as Newberry improves to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. Wingate is 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the SAC.

Kelli Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C.) posted 12 points each. Bonner hit four-of-six three-point field goals.
Bonner hit a triple to give Wingate a 60-58 lead with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. After a Newberry time-out, Lepaio sent the contest to extra time as she converted a lay-up with five seconds left. The Bulldogs did not get an opportunity for a last shot, as Brown collected a steal as time expired.
The Wolves never trailed in the overtime frame. Creed hit a three-pointer to open the overtime scoring. Wollett and Lepaio traded lay-ups to make the score 65-62 with two minutes remaining. Bonner hit her fourth and final triple to tie the score for the sixth time with 1:47 left. The Bulldogs would not make another field goal, as Newberry finished the game on a 9-1 run.
Brown hit her only three-pointer of the night to break the tie and make the score 68-65 Newberry with 1:24 to go. Dunbar hit one of two free throws on the next trip down the court to cut the deficit to two. Creed hit her third three-pointer of the night to put the Wolves up 71-66 with 42 ticks on the clock. Newberry made three-of-four free throws in the waning moments to keep Wingate at bay.

The lead changed 14 times Wednesday night. The contest was tied on six occasions. Wingate’s largest lead was 40-35 with 13:45 left in the second stanza. The Bulldogs shot 46.2 percent in the second half (12-of-26), after shooting a chilly 33.3 percent in the first frame (11-of-33). On the night, Wingate shot 38.5 percent from the floor (25-of-65).

Ellie Gleeson (Albury, New South Wales, Australia) supported Lepaio’s nine-rebound effort with seven boards each.
Newberry outscored Wingate 46-30 in the paint. The Wolves blocked eight shots, as Lepaio rejected four and Gleeson blocked two. The two teams combined for 44 turnovers. Newberry hit six three-point field goals, while Wingate drained five.
The Bulldogs return home Saturday, hosting Brevard in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. Game time is 2 p.m. The Wolves entertain Catawba Saturday at the same time.
