LMU uses second-half surge to take 65-56 victory over Wingate

Harrogate, Tenn.----The Lincoln Memorial University women’s basketball team used a second-half surge to take a 65-56 South Atlantic Conference victory over Wingate University Saturday night in Tex Turner Arena on the LMU campus. Both teams are 9-9 overall. Wingate is 3-5 in the SAC, while LMU is 2-6 in the league.
 
LMU junior guard Kalasia Green (Leveen, Ariz.) led all scorers with 17 points. Senior guard Kelsey Bradford (Metropolis, Ill.) and freshman forward Elliotte Roberts (McDonough, Ga.) added 10 points each for the host Railsplitters. Wingate senior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 points for the visiting Bulldogs. Wingate juniors Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) and Chantal Dunbar (Norfolk, Va.) recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Dunbar hit a fast-break bucket to cut Wingate’s deficit to 40-39 with 13:04 remaining in the contest. The Railsplitters answered with a 9-0 spurt, capped by a traditional three-point play by Bradford at the 8:54 mark. The Bulldogs missed four field goal attempts and four free throw tries as Lincoln Memorial took a 49-39 edge.
 
A short jumper by Roberts gave LMU a 59-45 lead with 3:46 to go. The 14-point advantage was the largest Railsplitter margin of the evening. The Bulldogs didn’t quit, as Wollett nailed a triple with 37 seconds left to trim the deficit to 63-56. Wingate would get no closer down the stretch.
 
The two teams were tied 28-28 at intermission. Green led the Railsplitters with nine first-half points. Dunbar had six markers for Wingate, while Wollett and sophomore guard Kelli Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C.) contributed five points each.
 
The LMU bench outscored the Wingate reserves 22-6. The Railsplitters shot 50 percent in the pivotal second half (14-of-28) and 41.8 percent for the game (23-of-55). The ‘Splitters outrebounded the Bulldogs 42-39, including a 25-17 second-half margin. LMU junior guard/forward MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio) had eight rebounds to lead the hosts, while Dunbar had eight rebounds to top the Wingate charts.
 
Wingate was three-of-10 from the free throw line. Lincoln Memorial was 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from the charity stripe. The Railsplitters blocked six shots with Boddie notching three rejections. Bulldog sophomore forward Brooklyn Boston (Lenoir, N.C.) had three blocked shots for Wingate. Boston filled out her statistics ledger with six points and four rebounds in her 19 minutes.
 
Both teams play at home Wednesday. The Bulldogs host Catawba at 6 p.m., while LMU entertains Tusculum at the same time. Wingate will join the 27th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. Sponsored by the WU School of Sport Sciences, the theme for this year’s NGWSD celebration is “Girls in Sports, an Investment in the Future.”
