Balanced scoring helps Wingate blank Brevard 3-0 Friday night

Wingate, N.C.---- Three different players scored one goal each as the Wingate University men's soccer team blanked Brevard College 3-0 in South Atlantic Conference action Friday night at the WU Soccer Complex. The host Bulldogs improve to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, scoring three goals in the final 20 minutes of the contest. The BC Tornados fall to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the SAC.
 
For Wingate, senior midfielder Pedro Figueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) had one goal and one assist each. Bulldog junior forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied Wingate's third goal with seven-plus minutes remaining in the second half.
 
Gadsby posted the match-winning goal in the 71st minute. Junior defender Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) made an excellent lead pass which freshman forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) redirected to Gadsby. The sophomore midfielder chipped the ball into the goal from close range for his fourth score of the season.
 
Eighty seconds later, Gadsby and Figueira connected for Wingate's second goal. A Gadsby cross found Figueira in stride. The assist allowed Figueira to beat the Brevard freshman goalkeeper Heath Turner (Kansas City, Mo.) for his third goal of the 2013 campaign.
 
Da Silva recorded his team-best seventh goal in the 83rd minute. A Figueira cross allowed Machell to flick the ball to Da Silva, who powered a shot into the back of the nets. On the night, Wingate outshot Brevard 21-3 with an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Wingate junior goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Ontario) posted the shutout. In 90 minutes, he had two saves. Turner also went the distance, recording eight saves and allowing three goals.
 
Both teams play non-conference road matches Wednesday. Wingate visits number 18 Lander for the NSCAA-TV Game of the Week Wednesday at 7 p.m. Brevard travels to Pfeiffer for a 3 p.m. encounter Wednesday.
