Big second half leads Bulldogs past Tornados 3-0

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored three goals in the second half Saturday afternoon en route to a 3-0 victory over visiting Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Bulldogs improve to 8-1-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 3-7-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the conference.  

The first half went scoreless, despite Wingate out-shooting Brevard 11-1. The best chance for the Bulldogs came on a shot from redshirt junior forward Brandi Baldwin (Indian Trail, N.C.) from just outside the box, which hit the crossbar. Brevard had a chance late in the first half when Katherine Nickels got behind the defense and had a one-on-one against Wingate junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.). Hardie came out to challenge Nickels, who was forced to shoot early and the shot went just wide of the left post.

The Bulldogs got on the board 13 minutes into the second half, when senior midfielder Chandler Murphy (Pawleys Island, S.C.) headed in a cross from junior forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) to make it 1-0.

Wingate added to its lead six minutes later, when freshman midfielder Naomi Matley (Clover, S.C.) netted her first career goal, getting the assist from senior midfielder Taryn Grivois (Murietta, Calif.).

The All-American Montgomery found the back of the net in the 72nd minute, giving the 'Dogs a 3-0 advantage with her league-best 10th goal of the season.

The Bulldogs outshot Brevard 33-5 on the afternoon, holding a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. In Wingate's three-game winning streak, the 'Dogs have outscored their opponents 10-0 while out-shooting the opposition 101-15. Hardie got the win for the Bulldogs. The junior has now played 600 minutes in goal this year, allowing only one goal. Junior Lauren Schoonover (Lake Stevens, Wash.) registered three saves in the second half for Wingate. Brittany Webster had six saves for the Tornados.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, traveling to Lander for a 4 p.m. start. Brevard is also in action Wednesday, traveling to Pfeiffer for a 1 p.m. start.
