Second half surge sends #12 Lander past short-handed Bulldogs

Greenwood, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs played a man-down the final 57 minutes of regulation Wednesday night, giving up four second-half goals in a 5-1 loss at 12th-ranked Lander in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. The Bearcats improve to 8-1-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-4 on the season.

The Bulldogs and Bearcats met twice during the 2012 season, with Wingate winning both contests. The Bulldogs defeated Lander 2-1 in the NCAA regional semifinals en route to the first regional title in Wingate men's soccer history. The Bearcats are currently ranked second in the NSCAA regional poll, while the Bulldogs are ranked seventh.

Wingate would get on the board first, with junior forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) netting his eighth goal of the season 5:34 into the contest.

Lander tied the match 21 minutes later when Kevin Durand found the back of the net to make it 1-1.

With 12 minutes remaining in the opening half, Wingate sophomore Liam Gillesphey (Newcastle, England) was issued a red card, leaving the Bulldogs a man-down for the remainder of the match.

The Bearcats took advantage early in the second half, scoring three times in the first 11 minutes. Clement Dauchy put Lander on top 3:25 into the second half. He scored again five minutes later to make it 3-1.

Durand netted his second goal of the contest 10 minutes into the second half to push the Lander lead to three. Ollivier Gueguen made the final margin 5-1 with a goal in the 74th minute.

Lander outshot Wingate 25-11, holding a 15-4 edge in the second half. The Bearcats also had a 15-7 edge in shots on goal. Barrett Nielsen had had six saves for Lander. Junior Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Canada) had three saves for the Bulldogs, while junior Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) collected seven saves.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 4 p.m. start.
