Montgomery and Hardie lead Bulldogs to 1-0 victory at Lander

Greenwood, S.C.----Wingate University All-American Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) scored the lone goal Wednesday afternoon as the visiting Bulldogs picked up a 1-0 victory at Lander University in NCAA Division II women's soccer action. Wingate wins its fourth straight game, improving to 9-1-3 overall. The Bearcats fall to 9-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs entered the contest ranked fifth in the region according to the NSCAA/Continental Tire regional rankings, which were released Tuesday afternoon. Lander was ranked seventh in the regional poll.

The first half would go scoreless, with Lander out-shooting Wingate 8-5. The Bulldogs held a 3-2 edge over the Bearcats in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Wingate got on the board with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Montgomery ripped a left footer into the corner of the net, getting the assist from junior midfielder Katie Simpson Eiss (Indian Trail, N.C.). The nation's leader in goals last year, Montgomery has scored in each of Wingate's last four contests. She now has a league-best 11 goals and 27 points this season.

Each team took nine shots in the second half, giving Lander a 17-14 advantage in shots on the afternoon. Wingate took six shots on goal in the second half, holding a 9-7 edge in the category for the match. Junior Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) registered a season-high seven saves. Hardie has allowed only one goal in 690 minutes of action this season. Katie Lyle had eight saves for the Bearcats.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 1 p.m. start. The match ends a stretch that in which Wingate plays five of six contests on the road. The Bulldogs return home next Wednesday, hosting Queens at 5 p.m.
