Gadsby leads the way as Wingate cruises to 4-1 win at Newberry

Newberry, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 27 minutes of action Saturday afternoon en route to a 4-1 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 1-12-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the conference. Sophomore midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) netted a pair of goals for the Bulldogs.

Gadsby got the scoring started 7:33 into the contest, taking a cross from sophomore forward Gustavo Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to register his fifth goal of the year.

Junior midfielder Dillon Payne (Longwood, Fla.) netted his first goal of the season in the 24th minute to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) had the assist on the play.

Gadsby's second goal of the half came off a rebound on a shot from sophomore midfielder James Card (Newcastle, England) with 19 minutes remaining in the first half to make it 3-0.

The Bulldogs outshot Newberry 12-2 in the first half, taking four shots on goal while not allowing the Wolves to have any shots on target.

Junior forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) headed home his team-best ninth goal of the year off a cross from senior midfielder Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) 13 minutes into the second half to give the 'Dogs a four-goal lead.

Newberry got on the board in the 62nd minute when Jay Barajas scored on a penalty kick, making the final margin 4-1.

The Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 17-12 on the afternoon, holding an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) had three saves for the Bulldogs. Patrick Sweatt had a pair of saves for Newberry.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, taking on first-place Queens at 7:30 p.m. The Royals entered Saturday afternoon 10-1 overall and 7-0 in the SAC, the only team ahead of the Bulldogs in the conference standings.
