Bulldogs hand #11 Queens first SAC loss of the season

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs snapped the 11-match winning streak of 11th-ranked Queens University Wednesday night, prevailing 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. The Bulldogs improve to 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the SAC. Queens loses for the first time since its season opening game, falling to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the conference.

The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the board, with junior forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) ripping a left-footer into the back of the net from 30 yards out to make it 1-0. The preseason All-SAC selection has scored a goal in five consecutive games for Wingate, ranking third in the conference with 10 goals on the year.

The Bulldogs took a two-goal lead in the 28th minute. Freshman forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) lined one into the corner, netting his fifth goal of the year to make it 2-0. Sophomore midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) and freshman midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) assisted on the play.

Wingate out-shot Queens 14-7 on the night, holding a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) registered a save to preserve the shutout for the Bulldogs. Montrell Morgan had a pair of saves for the Royals.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Anderson at 7:30 p.m. Queens travels to Carson-Newman Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
