Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s basketball team will look to continue its winning streak Wednesday, hosting Anderson (S.C.) University for a 6 p.m. South Atlantic Conference contest in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court on the Wingate campus. Both teams bring two-game winning streaks to the table Wednesday.
On Saturday, Wingate scored a season-high 82 points in an 82-50 SAC home victory over Mars Hill. Bulldog senior guard
Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) celebrated Senior Day in style, scoring 18 points to lead the Bulldogs to the convincing victory. Wingate outscored Mars Hill 44-18 in the second half.
Wollett knocked down four-of-six shots from three-point range on Saturday, adding six assists and two steals. Junior guard
Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) added 15 points, six assists and six rebounds, while junior forward
Chantal Dunbar (Virginia Beach, Va.) registered her conference-leading 10th double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Kelli Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C.) had 15 points, hitting five-of-seven shots from beyond the arc.
In the first 2013 meeting between the two teams, Anderson earned a 62-46 home victory. Trojan senior guard
Alissa Diaz posted a season-high 26 points to lead the hosts. AU sophomore guard
Sierra Simpson supported Diaz’s monster night with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Anderson senior forward
Breonda Shannon led all players with 11 rebounds as the AU Trojans outrebounded the Wingate Bulldogs by 14 rebounds. As a result, the Trojans posted 15 second-chance points to zero for the Bulldogs.
Wollett and freshman forward
Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) had 13 points each for the visiting Bulldogs. Williams added 11 markers, while Dunbar had 10 boards. The Bulldogs were outrebounded for only the third time on the season. The two teams combined for only 42 second-half points after a 66-point first frame.
Wingate averages 64.6 points per game at home, compared to 60.7 points per game overall. The Bulldogs are 9-4 at home this season, including a 5-2 slate against SAC foes. Williams leads Wingate with her 13.0 points per game, while Wollett (11.5), McGee (10.9) and Dunbar (10.8) join her in double figures.
Williams (13.7 points per game), Wollett (12.1) and Dunbar (11.2) have higher scoring averages in SAC play. Dunbar is the only SAC women’s basketball player who averages a double-double with her 10.8 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. She leads the league in rebounding, helping her team top the SAC charts in rebounding margin (+7.5).
The Bulldogs lead the SAC in three-point field goal percentage, converting 33.9 percent of their shots from downtown. Anderson is second in the SAC, hitting 33.3 percent from behind the arc. The Trojans lead the league in scoring margin (+6.2) and free throw percentage (74.8). Diaz is second in the SAC with her 17.4 points per game. In her last regular season game at Wingate, she had 29 points and 10 rebounds on Jan. 25, 2012.
Anderson has attempted 489 three-point field goals this season, while Wingate has tried 342 trifectas. AU senior guard
Amanda Parris leads the Trojans with her 48 triples. Anderson sophomore guard
Lesley Woods has 42 three-pointers. Bonner and Wollett lead Wingate with 41 and 40 three-pointers made, respectively.
Both teams play road games Saturday. Wingate ventures to Brevard, while Anderson visits Carson-Newman. Both the Bulldogs and the Trojans will be looking to sweep the season series with their Saturday opponents.
