Late run helps Anderson (S.C.) edge Wingate 77-71 Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Anderson (S.C.) University women’s basketball team made a 13-2 run late in the second half to secure a 77-71 South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball victory Wednesday night at the Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. The flurry turned a 57-57 game into a 69-59 contest with two minutes remaining.
 
With the victory, Anderson improves to 18-7 overall and 12-3 in the SAC. The first-place Trojans lead Lenoir-Rhyne by one game in the SAC women’s basketball standings (with three games to play). Wingate is 12-13 overall and 6-9 in the SAC.
 
Anderson senior center Tilde Ahlin (Södertälje, Sweden) led the visitors with 15 points. Ahlin hit a game-high four three-point field goals as the Trojans nailed 10 triples Wednesday. AU senior guards Amanda Parris (Summerville, Ga.) and Alissa Diaz (Coral Springs, Fla.) had 13 points each, while senior forward Breonda Shannon (Columbia, S.C.) added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Wingate junior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with 23 points. She pulled down nine rebounds. Freshman forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) had 17 points, while junior forward Chantal Dunbar (Virginia Beach, Va.) contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dunbar’s double-double is her 11th this season, tops in the SAC.
 
A three-point field goal by Diaz gave the Trojans a 54-46 lead with 11:13 remaining. Wingate responded with an 11-2 run to take a 57-56 lead on a three-point field goal by sophomore guard Kelli Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C.) at the 6:21 mark. McGee had four points during the Bulldogs’ flurry.
 
Anderson had the answer, putting together a 13-2 run to take a 69-59 advantage on an old-fashioned three-point play by Shannon with 2:03 to go. The 10-point lead was the biggest advantage for either team. Five different Trojans scored during the run with Ahlin, Shannon and sophomore center Jaclyn Moore (Lisbon, N.Y.) contributing three points each.
 
A fast-break lay-up by Williams cut the Wingate deficit to 76-71 with seven seconds remaining. The Bulldogs would get no closer in the waning moments. The Trojans made eight-of-12 free throws in the final 63 seconds to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
 
Anderson led 36-33 at halftime as both teams shot 50 percent or better in the opening stanza. The Trojans hit 50 percent (15-of-30), while the Bulldogs converted 53.8 percent (14-of-26). Parris and Ahlin had eight points each to lead Anderson in the first 20 minutes. Williams topped the Wingate charts with her 10 points. The Bulldogs led by as many as seven points in the early stages of the first half.
