Brevard hits season-high in 80-67 SAC victory over Wingate


Brevard, N.C.----The Brevard College women’s basketball team hit a season-high 80 points, collecting an 80-67 South Atlantic Conference victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon in Boshamer Gymnasium. The BC Tornados (6-18 overall, 4-12 SAC) shot a season-best 54.9 percent from the floor against the Bulldogs (12-14 overall, 6-10 SAC).
 
For Brevard, freshman guard/forward Tuccoa Brackett (Marion, N.C.) led all scorers with 22 points. BC sophomore guard/forward Taylor Hiatt (Mount Airy, N.C.) hit a career-high 20 points, nailing five-of-seven three-point field goals. Senior guard Michaela Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) and freshman forward Shelby Wolfe (Pittsboro, N.C.) netted 15 points each for the hosts.
 
Wingate junior forward Chantal Dunbar (Virginia Beach, Va.) topped the Bulldog charts with 21 points. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Senior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Bulldog junior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

In the second half, Brevard shot 65.5 percent from the floor (19-of-29) to turn a 30-30 halftime deadlock into a 50-point effort after intermission. A lay-up by Wingate sophomore Sarah Burnick (Charlotte, N.C.) tied the game for the seventh (and final) time 39-39 with 15:32 to play. A Wolfe lay-up nudged Brevard’s lead to 55-45 at the 10:52 mark.
 
Williams hit a lay-up on Wingate’s next possession, cutting the deficit to 55-47. The Bulldogs would get no closer the rest of the way. A Brackett inside hoop with 6:11 remaining gave the Tornados a 68-51 advantage. The 17-point bulge was Brevard’s largest lead of the afternoon.
 
In the first half, the lead changed hands six times with four ties. A jumper by Dunbar gave Wingate a 28-21 lead with 5:04 to go in the opening frame. The seven-point edge was the Bulldogs’ biggest lead Saturday. Hiatt responded for the hosts, making a personal 9-0 statement to give the Tornados a 30-28 lead with 2:13 left. Hiatt hit two of her five triples during the flurry.
 
Wingate hit 49.1 percent from the floor (26-of-53), the team’s third-best shooting night of the season. Brevard converted 28-of-51 field goals for its 54.9 percent effort. The Tornados turned 21 Wingate turnovers into 26 points. The Bulldogs scored 10 points from nine Brevard miscues. Wingate held a 30-18 rebounding advantage and a 15-9 edge in second-chance points.
 
The Bulldogs return home Wednesday as they host Lincoln Memorial for a 6 p.m. encounter in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. The game will be the final home contest for Wingate seniors Wollett, Jecia Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and Tish Logan (Suitland, Md.). The Bulldogs are 37-13 overall at home during the past four seasons. Brevard hits the road Wednesday, visiting league-leading Anderson (S.C.) for a 6 p.m. game.
