#10 Wingate scores four unanswered goals to down Braves in top 25 showdown

Wingate, N.C.----The 10th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs erased an early 1-0 deficit by scoring four unanswered goals Wednesday night, defeating No. 24 UNC Pembroke 4-1 in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 overall, while the Braves fall to 2-1 on the season. The victory gives head coach Gary Hamill his 250th career win at Wingate.

The Braves got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead when Reece Rooney headed in a cross from Adam Smith 6:34 into the contest.

Wingate tied the game nine minutes later when sophomore midfielder James Card (Newcastle, England) scored his second goal of the season on a feed from junior forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The match would head to intermission tied 1-1.

The Bulldogs took the lead 10 minutes into the second half when freshman forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) lined one into the top corner from the edge of the box, one-timing it off a feed from sophomore midfielder Gustavo Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Machell gave the 'Dogs a two-goal lead 10 minutes later, taking a cross from sophomore midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) right in front of the goal and finding the back of the net. Senior forward Fabio Azeredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also had an assist on the play. Da Silva added a goal on a penalty kick in the final minute of the contest, making the final margin 4-1.

The Bulldogs out-shot UNC Pembroke 18-4 on the night, holding an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The 'Dogs had six shots on goal in the second half, compared to just one from the Braves. Junior Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) registered a save to preserve the Wingate victory. Ryan Hanson had four saves for the Braves.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, traveling to Carson-Newman to begin conference play at 7 p.m. UNC Pembroke hosts Georgia Southwestern Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
