Nelson’s OT game-winner gives #10 Wingate 2-1 win at Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn.----Wingate University freshman defender Alex Nelson (Newcastle, England) scored with less than five minutes to go in the second overtime to give the visiting Bulldogs a 2-1 victory at Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday night. The 10th-ranked Bulldogs improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Eagles got on the board first, with Nick Skoda scoring 5:03 into the contest, on the assist from Lucas Siqueira. Carson-Newman would hold a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

Wingate nearly tied the contest midway through the second half when a shot from sophomore midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) hit the crossbar.

The Bulldogs found the back of the net with 1:12 remaining in regulation, when junior forward Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his second goal of the season to tie the match 1-1 and send it to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, the Bulldogs would win the contest when Nelson netted his first career goal in the final minutes of the second overtime.

Wingate out-shot Carson-Newman 18-12 on the night, out-shooting the Eagles 14-5 in the second half and two overtime periods. The Bulldogs also held a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) had six saves for the Bulldogs. Rumwald Le Guevel had 11 saves for the Eagles.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, hosting Lees-McRae at 7 p.m.
