Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs opened the 2013 home slate with a 2-0 victory against Lees-McRae College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 4-0-2 overall while the Bobcats fall to 1-4 on the season.
The Bulldogs got on the board with less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, when freshman midfielder
Maggie Smith (Monroe, N.C.) scored her first career goal. Senior midfielder
Taryn Grivois (Murietta, Calif.) had the assist on the play, leading the fast break and threading a perfect pass through the defense to Smith on the right side of the box.
The Bulldogs added to their lead 3:27 into the second half when freshman midfielder
Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored her second goal of the season. The goal came off a rebound right in front of the net after a shot from freshman forward
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) was saved by LMC keeper
Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.).
Wingate out-shot Lees-McRae 17-5 on the day, holding a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had three saves to preserve the shutout. Briggs notched eight saves for the Bobcats.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 4 p.m. Lees-McRae hosts Belmont Abbey Saturday at 3 p.m.Â
