Grivois and Hardie lead Wingate to 3-0 SAC victory over Catawba Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior midfielder Taryn Grivois (Murrieta, Calif.) scored two goals and junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) extended her scoreless minutes streak to 290 as the Bulldogs blanked Catawba College 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday evening at the WU Soccer Complex.
 
The reigning SAC Co-Player of the Week, Hardie has three shutouts in Wingate's last three matches. With the victory, Wingate improves to 5-0-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs are the only SAC school without a loss. Catawba falls to 2-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the SAC.
 
Wingate freshman midfielder/forward Brittany Smith (Monroe, N.C.) gave Hardie and the Bulldog defense the only goal they would need, scoring her first career goal in the 39th minute on an assist from freshman midfielder/forward Naomi Matley (Clover, S.C.). Smith took a lead pass from Matley and got behind the Catawba defense for the match-winner.
 
Grivois scored her first two goals of the season to put the match on ice. She made the score 2-0 in the 55th minute on an assist from senior defender Chelsey Horan (Waxhaw, N.C.). Grivois deflected the ball off a Catawba defender from close range.
 
With 55 seconds remaining, Grivois had a one-on-one with the keeper and found the back of the nets. She was assisted on the play by sophomore defender Lindsay Hyde (Shirley, Mass.). Grivois records her first career two-goal match Wednesday.
 
Both teams took seven shots Wednesday. Each team had three shots on goal. Hardie had two saves, earning her third victory in three tries. Catawba sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Davis (Salisbury, Md.) took the loss. She allowed three goals in 90 minutes.
 
The Bulldogs hit the road for five of their next six contests. Wingate's next three matches are SAC road encounters, starting Sunday at Tusculum (1 p.m.). The Bulldogs travel to Mars Hill and Coker next week before hosting Brevard Saturday, Oct. 12. Wingate travels to Lander and Newberry for the last two matches of the road swing.
 
The Wingate match is first of four consecutive road matches for Catawba. The Indians visit Newberry Saturday (1:30 p.m.), then venture to Chowan (Oct. 2) and Coker (Oct. 5).
