#16 UNC Pembroke takes 38-10 victory over Wingate Saturday

Pembroke, N.C.----UNC Pembroke redshirt senior quarterback Luke Charles (Murphy, N.C.) threw three touchdown passes and the Braves defense recorded eight quarterback sacks Saturday, helping the 16th-ranked hosts to a 38-10 victory over Wingate University at Grace P. Johnson Stadium and Lumbee Guaranty Bank Field on the UNCP campus.
 
UNC Pembroke improves to 4-0 overall for the first time in its seven-year football history. Wingate is 1-2 overall. The Bulldogs host South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry College Saturday, Oct. 5 for Family Weekend and Pink Day. Kick-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. UNC Pembroke visits the Charlotte 49ers Saturday, Oct. 12 at 12 noon.

The Braves had 416 yards total offense, converting nine-of-18 third down plays. Charles was 19-of-36 for 188 yards and three scoring strikes (to three different receivers). He also threw two interceptions. UNCP redshirt freshman running back Rontonio Stanley (Nakina, N.C.) ran for 101 yards and a fourth quarter score on 11 carries.

Charles found senior wide receiver Te'Vell Williams (Omaha, Neb.) on a 15-yard pass down the far sideline to give the Braves a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter. UNCP senior linebacker Darcus Elliott (Pittsboro, N.C.) returned an interception 49 yards for a TD two minutes later. Charles hit redshirt senior wide receiver Jason Perry (Denver, N.C.) on a 19-yard scoring play with nine minutes left in the second quarter to make the score 21-0 at halftime.

Wingate's first drive of the third quarter covered 16 plays. The Bulldogs got on the board when redshirt junior placekicker Patrick Smith (Hickory, N.C.) hit a 40-yard field goal at the 6:19 mark. After a UNCP touchdown, Bulldog redshirt senior quarterback Robbie Nallenweg (Asheville, N.C.) connected with redshirt junior wide receiver Patrick Derenda (Manassas, Va.) on a 15-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the third quarter. Smith's PAT made the score 28-10 UNC Pembroke.

Wingate sophomore linebacker Eric Mapoles (Snellville, Ga.) led both teams with 12 tackles and eight solo stops. Bulldog redshirt sophomore defensive back Jay Willis (Mooresville, N.C.) and redshirt junior defensive back Jakeem Polk (Lakeland, Fla.) had second quarter interceptions for the visitors. A converted offensive player, Willis notches his first career interception.

Nallenweg completed 20-of-30 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions. Wingate redshirt junior wide receiver Hunter Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jiwan Funderburk (Pageland, S.C.) caught four passes each. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Angelo Crawford-Reid (Gastonia, N.C.) had four kick-off returns for 82 yards.

Wingate leads the series between the two schools 4-3. The Bulldogs earned a 57-14 victory in the first meeting between the two schools (2007). Wingate also picked up wins in 2008, 2010 and 2011. UNC Pembroke has won the last two meetings between the local rivals.
