Tusculum hands Wingate its first loss of the season 1-0

Greeneville, Tenn.----The Tusculum College Pioneers scored the game's only goal in the first 10 minutes of the contest Sunday afternoon, as the Pioneers defeated visiting Wingate University 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 4-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 5-1-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference.

A shot from Tusculum's Jenique Thombs in the ninth minute of the contest was saved by Wingate junior Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.), but Thombs came up with the rebound and found Amy Neltner, who netted her third goal of the year to make it 1-0.

Tusculum out-shot Wingate 8-4 on the afternoon, holding a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. Marissa Williams had three saves to preserve the shutout for the Pioneers. Hardie registered four saves for the Bulldogs.

Wingate's four shots are a season low. Junior All-American Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) had a team-high two shots for the Bulldogs, including one shot on goal. This is only Wingate's fourth conference loss since the start of the 2010 season.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, Oct. 4, traveling to Mars Hill for a 5 p.m. start. Tusculum hosts Anderson next Sunday at 1 p.m.
