#8 Bulldogs prevail 3-1 at Brevard for 50th straight SAC win

Brevard, N.C.----For only the second time in SAC volleyball history, a team has reeled off a winning streak of at least 50 matches. The Wingate University Bulldogs are the only team to do it, with the first occasion coming from 2007-12. After an 83-match conference winning streak was snapped in 2012, the 'Dogs responded by winning 50 consecutive league matches. Wingate won by scores of 25-17, 21-25, 28-26 and 25-15 to improve to 20-1 overall and 13-0 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 10-10 overall and 4-9 in the conference.

Senior middle blocker Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) had 12 kills to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .455 while adding three digs, two blocks and two aces. Junior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) added 11 kills and seven digs, while sophomore middle blocker Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) contributed nine kills. Senior outside hitter Susie Murach (Burke, Va.) and freshman outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) registered seven kills each. Redshirt senior setter Alison Cooke (Davidson, N.C.) had 41 assists and eight digs, while freshman Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) had 10 digs. Senior Cory McGowan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) collected 11 digs to go along with six kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

"Tonight was much more about Brevard playing really well as opposed to us having an off night," head coach Shelton Collier says. "It is tough to travel and play well all of the time in this conference, but they played great and we had to really fight back to get this one. Brevard was serving in set three to take a 2-1 lead, so this for sure was one of the most difficult wins of the season for us."

Fatima Gharachorloo and Whitney DeMoss had 10 kills each to lead the Brevard attack. Hannah Elmore added nine kills, while Rachel Ruble contributed seven kills for the Tornados. Erin Barr had 35 assists and 10 digs, while Aleksandra Vrvilo collected 18 digs.

A pair of Potter kills sparked a 4-0 run that gave Wingate an 11-6 lead in the opening set. A Barr kill trimmed the lead to two at 11-9, but kills from Cooke and Murach pushed the lead back to four. An Elmore kill again cut the lead to two at 16-14, but a 6-0 run put the 'Dogs on top by eight. Murach had two aces in the flurry, while Bludau capped it with a kill. Another Bludau kill made it 24-16, while Potter capped the set with a kill.

An Elmore kill gave the Tornados a 10-7 lead in set two. Back-to-back Bludau kills tied it at 10-10, but a Ruble block capped a 3-0 run that put Brevard on top 13-10. Kills from Saehler and McGowan tied it at 16, but the Tornados again had the answer, using a 4-0 run to take a 20-16 lead on a Gharachorloo kill. An Elmore kill gave Brevard the set, tying the match 1-1.

Kills from Cooke and Murach helped Wingate take an 11-8 lead in set three. An Elmore kill tied it at 11, while a Ruble block put the Tornados on top 14-13. The Bulldogs regained the lead on a Potter kill, but a Gharachorloo kill tied it at 17. A kill and a block from Saehler gave the 'Dogs a 20-17 advantage, while a Stumpff kill and Brevard error made it 23-19. The Tornados answered with a 4-0 run, tying the set at 23 on back-to-back DeMoss kills. A Saehler kill put the 'Dogs on top 24-23, but a Wingate error and DeMoss kill gave the Tornados a 25-24 lead. A Stumpff kill tied it, but DeMoss responded with a kill to put BC back on top. A Brevard service error made it 26-26, while a block from Murach and Cooke put the 'Dogs on top. Potter capped the set with a kill, giving Wingate a 2-1 lead in the match.

A pair of Potter kills sparked a 3-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 14-8 lead in the fourth set. Two more Potter kills made it 17-10, while a 4-0 run put Wingate on top 21-11. Saehler capped the flurry with a kill. Back-to-back Stumpff kills made it 24-15, while a Bludau kill capped the match.

Wingate hit .227 on the night, with 55 kills and 23 errors in 141 attacks. The Tornados had 42 kills and 23 errors in 128 attacks, hitting .148. Murach, Stumpff and Potter each had two aces for Wingate, while Murach led the Bulldogs with three blocks.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 2 p.m. start.
