Wingate XC teams are first and second in Bulldog Stampede Saturday

, N.C.----The Wingate University women's cross country team had five runners in the top seven to take the team title in the 2014 Bulldog Stampede at WU Cross Country Facility. The Bulldog men finished second to NCAA Division II number 10 Mount Olive in the men's competition.
 
MEN'S 8K
 
Mount Olive had eight runners in the top 10 to post 20 points. Wingate was second with 59 points, followed by North Greenville (87), Virginia Wise (103), Wingate Alumni (119) and Johnson C. Smith (173). Bulldog sophomore Nepolian Patel led the Wingate charge with an 8K time of 27:21, claiming 10th on the individual leader board. 
 
Wingate junior Michael Hering was 11th with an 8K time of 27:24. Sophomore Alex Craig and redshirt freshman Anthony Gaudin were 13th (27:34) and 14th (27:47), respectively. Freshman Alex Tidwell completed Wingate's scoring quintet, as he earned 17th place with his 8K clocking of 28:37.
 
North Greenville junior Ahmad Nesbitt won the 2014 Bulldog Stampede individual crown with his 26:10 8K performance. Seven Mount Olive runners followed Nesbitt, led by sophomore Fredric Lang and his time of 26:55.
 
WOMEN'S 5K
 
Wingate sophomore Alyssa Johnson took the checkered flag, finishing the 5K course with a time of 18:56. Junior teammate Samantha Haering was second with a 5K time of 19:17. Three Bulldogs were fifth, sixth and seventh on the individual charts.
 
Sophomores Ashley Hinderer and Morgan Neher were fifth (19:28) and sixth (19:31), respectively. Graduate student Brianna Stevens was seventh, posting a 19:37 5K time in her final home event.
 
Mount Olive freshman Rebecca Farnsley was the top non-Bulldog finisher, claiming third place with her 5K time of 19:18. Wingate graduate assistant coach Jena Peacock (running unattached) was fourth with a 5K time of 19:26.
 
Wingate recorded 18 points to take the team crown. Mount Olive (51), North Greenville (72), Virginia Wise (114) and Johnson C. Smith (136) followed the Bulldogs on the team scoring ledger.
 
The Bulldog Stampede concludes Wingate's regular season agenda. Wingate will compete in the South Atlantic Conference meet Saturday, Nov. 8 in Salisbury. Catawba College will host the event at the Community Park.
