Columbus, Ga.----The fifth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs got a second half goal from freshman forward
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) Friday evening en route to a 1-0 victory over number four seed Armstrong State in the NCAA Southeast region women's soccer quarterfinals on the campus of Columbus State University. The Bulldogs improve to 13-2-4 overall, advancing to the regional semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Columbus State Sunday. Armstrong sees its season come to an end at 13-5 overall.
With the win, Wingate now has a 14-match unbeaten streak, going 12-0-2 in the span while outscoring opponents 40-2. The Bulldogs will play in the regional semifinals for the second consecutive year. The 'Dogs advanced past Columbus State in penalty kicks last year in Wingate to advance to the regional title match for the first time in program history.
The first half was evenly played, with each team taking eight shots. Wingate had three shots on target in the opening 45 minutes, while the Pirates had a pair of shots on goal.
The Bulldogs struck 13 minutes into the second half, when a lead pass from sophomore defender
Macy Franklin (Conover, N.C.) found Leyble alone in the box. The freshman found the back of the net for the sixth time this season.
"They put a lot of pressure on us early in the match," Wingate head coach
Chip Wiggins says. "We were able to open it up a little in the second half. We caught them in transition, Macy made a nice pass and Taylor had a great finish."
Wingate out-shot the Pirates 8-2 in the second half, finishing the day with a 16-10 edge in shots and a 5-3 shots on goal advantage. Senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had three saves as Wingate registered its 13 shutout of the season.
Morgan Luckie had four saves for Armstrong.
Wingate will face the number one seed Columbus State Sunday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's regional semifinals. The Cougars are ranked fifth in the nation, entering the contest 19-0-1 overall. "They're a great team," Wiggins says. "Any team that goes undefeated in the Peach Belt is obviously good. They're well-organized and have a great coach that I have much respect for."
