Gaffney, S.C.----Limestone College senior midfielder
Sean Orritt (Doncaster, England) scored on a free kick in the 96th minute, giving the number nine Saints a 1-0 overtime victory over Wingate University in the NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament second round Saturday night at Saints Field. Orritt's 11th goal of the season found the top right-hand corner of the goal from 30 yards out.
With the victory, Limestone improves to 16-2-1 overall. The Saints will play the Young Harris-Pfeiffer winner in the Sweet 16. Number 16 Wingate concludes its South Atlantic Conference regular season championship season 14-5-1 overall. The two teams split the mythical season series, as the Bulldogs defeated the Saints 1-0 at the WU Soccer Complex on Oct. 1.
The NCAA play-off contest was played in cold conditions, as the temperature dipped below freezing in the waning moments. As a result, neither team mounted much offense with both sides attempting five shots each. Limestone held a slight 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Limestone junior goalkeeper
Tom Godfrey (Ninfield, England) got the win. In 95-plus minutes, he collected one save. Wingate redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) also went the distance; he recorded one save and allowed one goal in 95-plus minutes.
In addition to the SAC regular season title, Wingate achieved a top 20 ranking this season. The Bulldogs advanced to the SAC tournament championship match following their run to the regular season crown. Wingate returns 10 of 11 starters for the 2015 season.
