Juul’s two goals lead Bulldogs to regular season SAC title

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) scored twice in a four-minute span Sunday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-0 victory over visiting Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. The win gives Wingate the outright regular season SAC championship. The Bulldogs finish the regular season 11-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the SAC. LMU falls to 7-5-3 overall and 4-4-3 in the conference.

This is the fifth regular season SAC title in Wingate men's soccer history. The last title came in the 2010 season. The Bulldogs will be the number one seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament. Wingate finished the regular season by going 9-1-1 in the last 11 games.

The first half went by scoreless, with LMU holding an 8-4 advantage in shots, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.

Wingate dominated the second half, out-shooting Lincoln Memorial 11-4. Juul got the scoring started five minutes into the second half, ripping a line drive into the right corner off a pass from junior midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England).

Juul struck again less than four minutes later, when freshman Damian Goana (Santiago, Chile) headed a cross from freshman James Scott (Newcastle, England) towards the box, which Juul took and ripped another line drive past the keeper for his fourth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs added another goal just six minutes later, when sophomore Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) ripped one over the keeper from the top of the box to notch his league-best 11th goal of the year, making it 3-0. Freshman Rodrigo Ugalde (Santiago, Chile) had the assist on the final goal of the game.

Wingate finished the day with a 15-12 advantage in shots, while holding a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) had five saves for the Bulldogs. Marcel Barwanietz had six saves for the Railsplitters.
