#12 Bulldogs sweep Coker in regular season home finale

Wingate, N.C.----The 12th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs wrapped up their regular season home slate Tuesday night, sweeping Coker College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-21 to improve to 26-2 overall and 19-1 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 5-23 overall and 1-19 in the conference.

Freshman outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) had 12 kills to lead the Wingate attack, adding six digs, an ace and a block. Junior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) added 11 kills, three blocks, two digs and two aces in two sets of action, hitting .391. Three other Bulldogs had at least three kills. Redshirt senior setter Alison Cooke (Davidson, N.C.) had 23 assists and 10 digs, while freshman libero Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C) collected 19 digs.

"This was our final home match, so it was great to go out with a win," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We appreciate that we have so many loyal fans here. Our team was especially proud of all of our young players for playing the entire third set and finding a way to win."

Coker jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, but the 'Dogs answered with eight straight points, getting two kills and a block from Stumpff. Coker answered with a 6-0 run, taking an 11-10 lead on five consecutive Bulldog errors. Back-to-back Stumpff aces put the 'Dogs on top by three, while a Stumpff kill made it 19-14. Back-to-back kills from senior Susie Murach (Burke, Va.), along with a Bludau kill made it 23-17, while a Stumpff kill made it 24-18. A kill from sophomore middle blocker Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) ended the first set.

Wingate jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second frame. Adams contributed five aces to the flurry, while Stumpff added two kills and two blocks. A kill and an ace from Saehler made it 15-4, while a block and a kill from freshman Natalya King (Parker, Colo.) put Wingate on top 19-6. A kill and a block from Bludau, followed by a Stumpff kill made it 24-10, while another Bludau kill capped the second set. The Bulldogs had 14 kills in the second frame, hitting .462.

Two aces from Alexis Berles gave the Cobras a 12-9 lead in set three. A Bludau kill, along with a pair of Coker errors gave the Bulldogs a 13-12 advantage. A kill from junior setter Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) put Wingate on top 17-15, but a Christen Bragg kill sparked a 3-0 Coker run that gave the Cobras an 18-17 lead. The 'Dogs responded with a 4-0 run, capped by back-to-back Bludau kills. A Brooke Closset kill trimmed the lead to one at 21-20, but kills from Bludau and sophomore Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) made it 23-20. Another Bludau kill made it 24-21, while a Coker error ended the match.

The Bulldogs hit .228 for the night, with 41 kills and 18 errors in 101 attacks. Coker had 19 kills and 18 errors in 90 attacks, hitting .011. Adams had six of Wingate's 12 aces, while Stumpff and Saehler led the way with three blocks each.

The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend, traveling to Mars Hill Friday for a 7 p.m. match and Tusculum Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
