Cold-shooting Bulldogs fall 59-56 against Lincoln Memorial

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs shot a season-low 26.5 percent from the field Saturday afternoon, dropping a 59-56 contest to Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball. LMU improves to 14-10 overall and 13-7 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 19-5 overall and 15-5 in the conference.

Senior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) celebrated Senior Day with 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Wingate attack. Senior forward Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C.) added 11 points and nine rebounds, while freshman guard Shelby Tricoli (Waynesville, N.C.) had 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Kalasia Green and Josey Harding had 11 points each to lead the Lincoln Memorial attack. Samantha Satterlee added 10 points for the Railsplitters, who never trailed in the second half.

Lincoln Memorial used an 18-4 run in the first half to take a 24-10 lead at the 5:11 mark. Katrina Ottesen started the spurt with back-to-back buckets, while Harding added five points in the flurry. Wingate countered with a 7-2 run to close the gap to 24-17 with under three minutes to go, with Williams scoring five of those points for the Bulldogs. A Tricoli triple cut the LMU lead to six, but another bucket from Ottesen helped the Railsplitters take a 28-21 lead into intermission.

Lincoln Memorial pushed the lead back to double figures when a Satterlee triple made it 38-27 three minutes into the second half. Back-to-back buckets from sophomore guard Amber Neely (Charlotte, N.C.) helped cut the lead to five at the 14:11 mark, but a jumper from Brittany Guy pushed the LMU advantage back to eight at 45-37 with 11:28 remaining. A bucket and two free throws from Harris, followed by another Harris jumper at the 8:49 mark got the 'Dogs to within three at 49-46 with 8:49 to go.

LMU stretched the lead back to seven on a bucket from Aisjah Roan at the 5:42 mark, but Wingate scored the next six points, cutting the Lincoln Memorial lead to one at 53-52 with two minutes to go. Williams scored the final four points of the flurry. A bucket from Guy was answered by a Williams bucket to make it a one-point game with 32 seconds left. Two Roan free throws pushed the advantage back to three, but Tricoli answered with a pair of free throws to make it 57-56 with 15 seconds to go. LMU missed a free throw with 14 seconds left, but the Bulldogs could not convert a layup on the other end. Two more Railsplitter free throws made it 59-56 with six seconds remaining. A desperation attempt at the buzzer fell short, giving LMU the victory.

Lincoln Memorial shot 39.7 percent from the field, hitting three-of-13 shots from three-point range (23.1 percent). Wingate hit just 18-of-68 shots for its season-low shooting percentage, while going three-for-10 from beyond the arc (30 percent). The Bulldogs held a 49-41 rebounding advantage, while holding a 21-11 edge in second-chance points. Wingate converted 21 LMU turnovers into 17 points.

The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting Newberry at 6 p.m. With two games to go in the regular season, Wingate is in a tie for first place with Lenoir-Rhyne, who also lost on Saturday to fall to 15-5 in SAC play.
