Wingate clinches share of SAC title with 69-46 victory at Brevard Saturday

Box Score
Brevard, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Kayla Harris (Raleigh, N.C.) posted her SAC-best 13th double-double of the season (18 points, 12 rebounds) to lead the Bulldogs to a 69-46 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory at Brevard College Saturday in Boshamer Gymnasium. Wingate (21-5 overall, 17-5 SAC) clinches a share of the SAC regular season title with the road triumph (NCAA box score).

Wingate freshman guard Shelby Tricoli (Waynesville, N.C.) added 12 points and five assists. The Bulldogs have won 11 SAC regular season crowns and six Food Lion SAC tournament championships. BC sophomore forward Shelby Wolfe (Pittsboro, N.C.) led the host Tornados with 11 points and five rebounds. Brevard concludes the 2013-14 season 7-19 overall and 6-16 in the SAC.

"Today was a great team effort," Wingate head coach Ann Hancock says. "I am happy and excited for our players. We had a tremendous defensive effort that got us started on a good note. We shot the ball well, rebounded and played as a team. Winning on the road is so important in our league. We will enjoy today and get ready for the tournament."

Wingate scored the first 17 points of the contest and never looked back. Harris had nine of the Bulldog points during the flurry, including her second three-point field goal in the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold. WU sophomore forward Sharee Boyd (Charlotte, N.C.) completed the explosion with two free throws at the 12:37 mark, giving the Bulldogs a 17-0 cushion.

Brevard got on the board when sophomore guard Katie Williams (Robbinsville, N.C.) hit a triple at 11:42. The Tornados converted only 15.8 percent of their field goals (three-of-19) in the opening frame as the Bulldogs built a 36-14 halftime margin.

The hosts did not get any closer than 20 points in the second half, thanks in large part to Wingate's 52 percent shooting after the break. The Bulldogs made 13-of-25 field goals after intermission. A three-pointer by freshman guard Taylor Walker (Trinity, N.C.) gave the visitors a 67-38 bulge with 2:23 remaining. The 29-point advantage was Wingate's largest lead of the afternoon.

The Bulldogs outscored the Tornados 32-16 on points in the paint. Wingate shot 46.3 percent from the floor (25-of-54), while Brevard managed only 23.4 percent shooting on its home hardwood (11-of-47). The Bulldogs had a hefty 44-27 rebounding margin, as senior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) supplemented Harris' board work with nine rebounds.

In 35 minutes, Wingate sophomore point guard Amber Neely (Charlotte, N.C.) had nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. She made only two turnovers. Williams filled out her statistics ledger with eight points and four steals. Sophomore center Alysia Hudson (Jacksonville, N.C.) had six points on three-of-four shooting from the floor.
