Second half surge leads Bulldogs to 2-0 win at UNC Pembroke

Pembroke, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored a pair of goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half Wednesday night en route to a 2-0 victory at UNC Pembroke in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 2-1 on the year, while the Braves fall to 0-2 overall.

No team found the back of the net in the opening half, with Wingate holding an 8-2 advantage in shots and 2-0 edge in shots on goal.  

The Bulldogs got on the board 10 minutes into the second half, when freshman Rodrigo Ugalde (Santiago, Chile) netted his first career goal, on the assist from sophomore forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England).

Wingate took a two-goal lead 11 minutes later, when Machell registered his fourth goal of the season. Senior forward Gui Peron (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched his first assist of the season on the play.

The Bulldogs finished the night with a 16-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) notched his first career shutout, collecting two saves on the night. Kenneth Perkinson had four saves for the Braves.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, opening conference play at home against Carson-Newman at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles played in the NCAA Division II national championship game in 2013.
