Box Score Hickory, N.C.----Lenoir-Rhyne University's
Brianna Belsky scored four minutes into the second overtime Saturday afternoon, giving the host Bears a 2-1 victory over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. LRU improves to 3-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The match featured the two most successful SAC teams over the past four years. Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne have combined to win every conference title since 2010 and met in the SAC championship match in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The Bulldogs also appeared in the 2013 title match, winning their second championship in three years.
Wingate got on the board first when sophomore forward
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) netted her team-best fifth goal of the season 14 minutes into regulation, taking advantage of a misplay by the LRU defense.
The Bears scored the equalizer 13 minutes later when
Amber Madriaga found the back of the net.
That would be all of the scoring in regulation. After a scoreless first overtime, Belsky took a pass from
Garcelle Alequine and scored her first goal of the season to give LRU a 2-1 victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne outshot Wingate 21-18 on the afternoon, holding an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Wingate senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had six saves for the Bulldogs.
Genny Little had four saves for Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Salisbury to take on the 12th-ranked Catawba Indians.
