Bulldogs roll to 4-0 victory at Catawba Wednesday night

Salisbury, N.C.----Four different Bulldogs scored Wednesday night as visiting Wingate University cruised to a 4-0 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the board, as freshman midfielder David Fairgrieve (Newcastle, England) netted his first career goal to give Wingate a 1-0 lead 3:21 into the match.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the 27th minute, when sophomore forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) scored his team-best fifth goal of the season to give Wingate a 2-0 lead heading to halftime. Senior forward Gui Peron (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman midfielder Mateo Correa (Medellin, Colombia) assisted on the play. The 'Dogs outshot Catawba 5-2 in the opening half.

Wingate added to its lead 11 minutes into the second half when senior defender Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) netted his first goal of the year to make it 3-0, getting the assist from Fairgrieve.  

The Bulldogs added a fourth goal 80 seconds later when Peron found the back of the net for the first time this season off a Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) assist to make it 4-0.

Wingate finished the night with a 13-3 edge in shots, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) notched the shutout for the Bulldogs. Christian Watts had two saves for the Indians.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, opening a five-game home stand against Tusculum at 5 p.m.
