Montgomery goal lifts Wingate to 1-0 SAC victory over Tusculum

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) scored her 54th career goal in the 84th minute, lifting the Bulldogs to a 1-0 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer victory over Tusculum College Saturday evening at the Wingate Soccer Complex.
 
Wingate improves to 3-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. Tusculum slips to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs host the University of Mount Olive Monday night at 7 p.m.
 
Montgomery's second match winner of the season places the Wingate All-American in the SAC all-time top 10 for career goals. Montgomery took a pass from sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) and rifled a line drive from the top of the box into the left-hand corner of the goal.
 
Wingate's best first half chance came in the 10th minute, when Montgomery hit the post. The Bulldogs outshot the visiting TC Pioneers 16-4 with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Montgomery led both teams with seven shots (three on goal).
 
Bulldog senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) twirled her second shutout of the young season (both in SAC play), posting three saves. Tusculum senior goalkeeper Marissa Williams (Canton, Mich.) also went the distance, allowing one goal and recording six saves.
 
The Tusculum match begins a four-match home stand for the defending Southeast Region champion Bulldogs. After the Mount Olive match Monday, Wingate entertains Mars Hill Saturday, Oct. 4 (5 p.m.) and Coker Wednesday, Oct. 8 (4:30 p.m.). The Pioneers return to the pitch Wednesday, visiting mountain rival Lees-McRae for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt.
