Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) scored three minutes into overtime Monday night, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over visiting Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Carson-Newman got on the board 5:28 into the first half, when
Rurik Pereira volleyed in a bicycle kick from inside the box on a perfect pass from
Marius Staalby.
Kristian Speak also assisted on the play.
Wingate scored the equalizer four minutes before halftime. Carson-Newman keeper
Kavi Luchowa lost the ball at the top of the box and freshman
Rodrigo Ugalde (Santiago, Chile) was there on the spot, finding senior forward
Gui Peron (Sao Paulo, Brazil) alone on the right side of the box for an easy goal to make it 1-1.
That would be all of the scoring until early in the first overtime period. Junior midfielder
Liam Gillesphey (Newcastle, England) started the play with a pass behind the defense from midfield. Peron took the pass towards the left corner and crossed one past the diving keeper, finding Machell alone in front of the goal, who netted his sixth goal of the year to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 win.
Carson-Newman finished the night with an 11-10 advantage in shots, holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper
Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) piled up five saves for the Bulldogs. Luchowa had one save for the Eagles.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, hosting fourth-ranked Limestone at 7 p.m. Wingate will host Mars Hill Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
