Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs got back on track after their first two losses of the year, cruising to a 4-0 victory against visiting Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday night. Wingate improves to 11-2-2 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 4-9 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
The Bulldogs got on the board 10 minutes into the opening half, when senior
Gustavo Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) ripped a line drive from the middle of the box past the keeper to make it 1-0. Senior
Cameron Burrows (Cary, N.C.) and junior
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) assisted on the play.
Wingate took a two-goal lead three minutes later. A deflection at the top of the box from sophomore
Garret Bridgewater (Cape Carteret, N.C.) found Juul in front of the post. The All-Region midfielder re-directed it towards the opposite post, finding the back of the net for the fourth time this year.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute. Juul started the play with a free kick from 30 yards out, serving one towards the line. Sophomore
Damian Gaona (Santiago, Chile) touched it towards the middle of the box, where senior
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) finished it with his fifth goal of the season.
Wingate's final goal of the night came with 10 minutes to go in the second half. Sophomore
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) had a free kick from just outside the box. He lined one into the far corner, giving him a SAC-best ninth goal this year, making the final margin 4-0.
The Bulldogs out-shot Catawba 23-4 on the night, holding a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) had one save to preserve the Wingate shutout.
Christian Watts had five saves for the Indians.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Day.
