Jefferson City, Tenn.----The fifth-seeded Armstrong State University Pirates defeated fourth-seeded Wingate University 5-0 in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon in Division II women's soccer action. The Pirates improve to 13-4-3 overall, advancing to the regional semifinals to face top-seeded Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon. Wingate ends its season at 15-3-2 overall.
It was another successful year for the Bulldogs, who got off to an 11-0 start on the year and cracked the top 10 of the NSCAA poll. Wingate finished second in the conference and advanced to the SAC Tournament title match for the sixth consecutive year. 2015 marked the fifth straight NCAA Tournament bid for the Bulldogs.
Armstrong got on the board in the 18th minute, when
Amanda Green scored off a
Sarah Olin assist.
Taylor Valley put the Pirates on top by two with 15 minutes to go in the opening half, getting a
Jenny Allen assist.
Armstrong wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, taking a 3-0 lead 52 seconds after intermission on a goal from Olin. Green notched the assist on the play.
Olin added another goal four minutes later, netting her seventh goal of the year off an assist from
Olivia DeJong to make it 4-0. Green capped the scoring in the 63rd minute, getting an assist from
Asa Thorsen to give the Pirates a five-goal lead.
Armstrong finished the night with a 22-5 advantage in shots, including a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected seven saves for the Bulldogs. Junior defender
Macy Franklin (Conover, N.C.) had a match-high two shots for Wingate.Â
