#1 Pfeiffer rallies past Wingate in NCAA regional semifinals

Misenheimer, N.C.----The top-ranked Pfeiffer University Falcons scored twice in the final nine minutes Sunday afternoon, rallying for a 2-1 victory over 11th-ranked Wingate University in the NCAA Division II men's soccer southeast regional semifinals. Pfeiffer improves to 21-0 on the year, while the Bulldogs end their season at 14-4-4.

It was another great season for the Bulldogs, who won the South Atlantic Conference regular season title and the SAC Tournament championship. It was the first time since 1994 that Wingate won both championships in the same year. The Bulldogs were ranked as high as seventh nationally during the year. Wingate has won two straight regular season SAC titles, earning three NCAA Tournament bids the last four years.

Wingate had the best chance to score in the opening half, but a shot from All-SAC midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) hit the post in the 35th minute. Pfeiffer outshot the Bulldogs 7-4 in the opening half.

Sophomore midfielder Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) was taken down in the box five minutes into the second half, giving the Bulldogs a penalty kick. Ross, the second team All-SAC selection, converted the PK, his fourth of the year on four attempts to make it 1-0.

The nation's top-ranked team got on the board with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation. Roberto Soares scored off a Martim Galvao assist to make it 1-1.

The Falcons struck again just 86 seconds later, when Nathan Regis scored his 26th goal of the year, heading home a rebound from a Galvao shot that hit the post off a free kick.

Pfeiffer outshot Wingate 20-12 on the match, with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Senior midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) led the Bulldogs with three shots, including one shot on goal. Tomas Correa had three saves for Pfeiffer. Freshman Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected four saves for the Bulldogs.
