Pablo Jara made a pair of saves in penalty kicks Friday afternoon as the second-seeded and 23rd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs advanced to the SAC title match for the second straight year. The semifinal match ended in a 0-0 tie, with Wingate advancing after a 3-1 victory in penalty kicks.
The Bulldogs move to 13-3-3 overall, advancing to the SAC title match for the second year in a row. Wingate will take on Queens University, who advanced to the title match in penalty kicks against top-seeded Carson-Newman earlier Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated Queens 5-0 in the regular season matchup. LMU moves to 10-3-3 on the year.
The first half saw Wingate take the first three shots, with the best attempt coming from
Charlie Machell. The 2014 SAC Player of the Year's free kick from just outside the box grazed off the post. LMU took the final five shots of the frame. The best Lincoln Memorial chance came in the 33rd minute when a
Nick Spielman header sailed just wide. A
Danilo Da Silva shot was saved by Jara with six minutes left in the half.
LMU held a 5-3 edge in shots in the first half, with each team registering one shot on goal.
The second half saw each team take eight shots. Jara collected saves against
Bryson Lehn and Da Silva in the first 11 minutes. A long free kick from Wingate's
Liam Gillesphey was saved by LMU keeper
Pedro Ozi in the 72nd minute.
The lone shot of the first overtime came from Wingate's
Garret Bridgewater, whose line drive from outside the box sailed just wide of the upper right corner.
The only shot in the second overtime was from Wingate's
Nate Evans, whose attempt in the closing seconds was stopped by Ozi.
Wingate went first in penalty kicks, with
Callum Ross converting his attempts. LMU's
Henrique Rezek responded by making his kick. Wingate's
Aksel Juul put the Bulldogs on top, while Jara denied
Philip Wong's effort, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Shaun Gadsby went third for Wingate. His PK was stopped by Ozzi, but Jara was there again for the Bulldogs, making another diving stop against da Silva. SAC Player of the Year
Jon Ander drilled his PK to put the 'Dogs on top 3-1. Spielman's attempt sailed just wide to end the contest.
The teams ended the night tied with 13 shots each. Both teams registered four shots on goal. Da Silva had a match-high four shots for the Royals. Jara collected four saves in addition to his heroics in penalty kicks. Ozi had four saves for the Railsplitters.
