Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University first team All-SAC midfielder
Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored in the 85th minute Friday night, leading the second-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Queens University in the semifinals of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer tournament at Manchester Meadows.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 15-1-2 overall, advancing to Sunday's SAC Championship match. This marks the sixth straight season Wingate will appear in the title match. The 'Dogs have won the last two SAC Tournament titles and three of the last four. Queens falls to 11-6-2 overall.
Wingate held a 6-4 edge in shots in the first half, with each team registering one shot on goal. A shot from freshman
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) just wide of the net in the 20th minute was deflected, setting up a corner kick. An
AJ Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.) corner kick found Brunworth in the box, but her header was turned away by Queens goalkeeper
Tori Danchak.
Less than a minute later it was Queens on the attack. A shot from
Caitlyn Rodrigues was knocked away by sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.).
The Bulldogs outshot Queens 7-5 in the second half, with a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) put a shot on frame eight minutes into the second half, while Moore's shot in the 78th minute was saved by Danchak.
Wingate struck with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. With the ball loose in the middle of the field from 25 yards out, Brunworth's quick shot sailed just over Danchak's fingertips, right under the crossbar to give the 'Dogs the 1-0 lead. The 2014 SAC Scholar-Athlete now has a team-best six goals this year. She has scored in each of Wingate's last three SAC Tournament games, including the lone goal in the 1-0 quarterfinal win on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs outshot the Royals 13-9 on the night, with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Each team had three corner kicks. Jones had two saves to preserve the Wingate shutout. The Bulldogs have now gone over 580 minutes without allowing a goal, registering six consecutive shutouts. Danchak collected four saves for Queens. Leyble led the Bulldogs with a match-high three shots.
Wingate is back in action Sunday, facing top-seeded Carson-Newman in the SAC title match. The contest is slated to kickoff at 4 p.m. at Manchester Meadows. The Eagles edged Wingate 1-0 in the regular season meeting in Tennessee, getting a in the final five minutes to hand the Bulldogs their lone loss of the year. The match will feature the top two teams in the NCAA Southeast Region. Carson-Newman was ranked number one in the most recent poll, with Wingate ranked second.
