Raleigh, N.C.----N.C. State redshirt junior guard
Dominique Wilson (Powder Springs, Ga.) had 18 points to lead the Wolfpack to a 72-37 NCAA women's basketball exhibition victory over Wingate University Sunday afternoon at Broughton High School. Wingate senior forward
Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with 10 points (
NCAA box score).
"Today was another tremendous opportunity for us," Wingate head coach
Ann Hancock says. "N.C. State is a very good team…playing them will definitely help us for the future. We learned the things we can and can't do against quick, athletic players."
"We had some bright spots with young players off the bench," Hancock says. "Freshmen
Caroline Averette (Midlothian, Va.) and
Zasha Barrett (Monroe, N.C.) made positive plays when they got their opportunities. Zasha did a terrific job on the boards and Caroline drove the ball aggressively. Morgan McGee was effective on both ends of the floor. She scored the ball and did a great job defending their posts."
McGee gave Wingate a brief 2-0 lead. Wilson hit a three-point field goal with 9:13 left in the first quarter, giving the host Wolfpack the lead for good. N.C. State led 22-8 after the first quarter and 41-18 at intermission. Thirteen of N.C. State's 15 players who participated found the scoring column.
Three Wingate student-athletes had five points each: junior guards
Alex Tomlinson (Raleigh, N.C.) and
Shelby Tricoli (Waynesville, N.C.) and freshman guard
Taylor Helms (Monroe, N.C.). Barrett pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added four points to her statistical ledger. Bulldog sophomore center
Marta Miscenko (Riga, Latvia) had six rebounds.
N.C. State outrebounded Wingate 62-47. Freshman guard
Kaila Ealey (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Wolfpack with 12 boards. She added five points. NCSU junior forward
Jennifer Mathurin (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) had six rebounds.
Hancock believes the Bulldogs learned much both on and off the court this weekend. "Overall, the trip was very educational," Hancock says. "We also had the chance to visit the
Kay Yow Cancer Fund. We were able to put additional meaning behind why we have the pink games that are now called Play4Kay. We were also able to play at the historic Broughton gym, home of
Pistol Pete Maravich."
Wingate opens the 2015-16 season Wednesday, Nov. 18, traveling to USC Aiken for a 5:30 p.m. NCAA Division II Southeast Region contest. The Bulldogs' first home game is Tuesday, Dec. 1, when Wingate entertains UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m. N.C. State hosts Villanova Friday at 5 p.m. The contest will be held at the PNC Arena in Raleigh.
