Hot-shooting Wolves down Bulldogs 100-76

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves knocked down 15 three pointers Wednesday night, shooting 60 percent from beyond the arc en route to a 100-76 victory over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Wolves improve to 19-8 overall and 13-8 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 15-12 overall and 12-9 in the conference. Wingate falls into a three-way tie for third place in the league standings, while Newberry is now alone in second place.

Demarkus Smith had 22 points to lead the Newberry attack, adding five rebounds. Dondray Walker added 18 points, hitting four-of-five shots from three-point range. Brandon Taylor contributed 13 points, going three-for-three from beyond the arc, while Xavier Holmes had 12 points on five-of-seven shooting. It is the first time a team has scored 100 points against Wingate since December of 2008, when Armstrong scored 101 points.

Senior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 25 points to lead the Wingate offense, knocking down seven-of-12 shots from three-point range. Sophomore forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) had 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists, hitting seven-of-nine shots from the field. Junior guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, while freshman guard Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Daye scored seven early points to give Wingate a five-point lead three minutes into the opening half. A Mitch Riggs layup gave the Wolves a one-point lead with 14 minutes remaining in the half, while Newberry added a 19-4 run to take a 34-18 advantage. Smith had seven points in the flurry, while Walker added five points. A Daye three cut the lead to 13, but a Xavier Hill triple made it 39-21 with 6:29 to go in the half.

A Cureton three-point play, followed by another triple from Daye got Wingate to within 12 at the 4:35 mark. Cureton added a layup and two free throws to cut the deficit to 10 at 41-31. A Layup from Holmes put the Wolves on top by 13 at the 2:47 mark, while Walker answered a Cureton bucket with two free throws. A Lolar layup in the final seconds helped Wingate cut the halftime deficit to 13 at 48-35.

A three from James Stepp put Newberry on top by 20 less than three minutes into the second half. A Lolar three and Cureton bucket cut the lead to 15, but a Smith jumper helped Newberry stretch the lead back to 18. Threes from Griffin and Daye got the Bulldogs to within 13 at 76-63 with 8:44 to go, while another Griffin three at the 7:19 mark made it 80-69. Newberry responded with a 17-5 run to go on top by 23 with two minutes to go. Smith contributed seven points in the spurt.

Newberry shot 58.7 percent from the field, while hitting 15-of-25 shots from beyond the arc (60 percent). The Wolves hit 10-of-13 shots from three-point range in the second half (76.9 percent). Wingate shot 42.2 percent from the field, hitting 13-of-33 shots from beyond the arc (39.4 percent). The Wolves held a 41-28 rebounding advantage, while outscoring Wingate 30-20 in the paint.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, wrapping up the regular season at home against Brevard at 4 p.m.
