Bulldogs ride strong pitching to 3-1 victory over Brevard in series opener

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University right-handers Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) and Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) combined to pile up 11 strikeouts without a walk Friday evening, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over visiting Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 10-3 overall and 7-3 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 7-7 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

Sophomore infielder Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was two-for-two with a double, scoring all three Wingate runs on the day. Senior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was one-for-four with two RBI, while senior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added a hit and three RBI. Redshirt senior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Hunter Donaldson was one-for-four with an RBI to lead the Brevard attack. Matthew Proffitt went one-for-three with a run scored.

Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Billings drew a leadoff walk, then stole second and scored on Clark's RBI single.

Brevard tied it with a run in the third. Proffitt started things with a one-out single, then went to second on a groundout and scored on Donaldson's RBI single down the left field line.

Wingate had the quick response, scoring in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. Billings again started things with a leadoff walk, then went to second on a Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) single. Billings would go on to score on an RBI groundout from Clark, making it 2-1.

The Bulldogs took a two-run lead in the fifth, which Billings got started with a leadoff double to right center. He would score on an RBI single from Spitz to make it 3-1.

The Wingate pitching staff took over from there, retiring the last 15 hitters of the game. Tyler Tant led off the fifth with a single, but Doolittle got out of the frame with a strikeout and two popouts. He worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning, getting a popout, strikeout and groundout. Doolittle finished his day with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, getting a pair of groundouts to go along with his eighth strikeout of the day.

Donahue entered the game to start the eighth and picked up right where Doolittle left off. Donahue struck out the first two batters he faced, while getting a groundout to end the frame. The sophomore got a groundout and strikeout to start the ninth, while ending the game with a groundout to shortstop.

Doolittle moves to 2-2 on the year. He allowed a run on five hits (all singles) in seven innings of work, striking out eight without walking a batter. Donahue got his first save of the year. The preseason All-SAC selection retired all six batters he faced in two innings of work, striking out three. Donaldson took the loss for Brevard, falling to 1-1. He allowed three runs on five hits in five innings of work, striking out five and walking two.

The Bulldogs and Tornados will meet for a doubleheader Saturday at Ron Christopher Stadium, with game on starting at 1 p.m.
