Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits Tuesday afternoon, snapping a three-game losing streak with a 12-5 win over visiting Shippensburg University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate improves to 14-6 overall, while the Raiders fall to 3-7 on the season.
Senior infielder
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) was three-for-five with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) was two-for-five with a homer and two RBI, while junior outfielder
Nick Triplett (Shelby, N.C.) had two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored for the Bulldogs. Freshman first baseman
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) also drove in two runs, while junior catcher
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) went two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.
Austin Allison went four-for-four with a homer and three RBI to lead the Shippensburg attack.
Dalton Hoiles added three hits and an RBI for the Raiders, while
Jake Kennedy also drove in a run.
Wingate jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Barnette started the scoring by connecting on his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left center to make it 2-0. Brown added an RBI single, while Triplett followed with an RBI double, then scored on a Simmons RBI single to put the 'Dogs on top by five.
The Raiders cut the lead to four on Kennedy's RBI double in the third. Shippensburg got within two in the fifth when RBI singles from Allison and Hoiles made it 5-3.
Wingate responded with a run in the bottom of the frame when Godinez connected on his fifth homer of the season to make it 6-3. RBI doubles from Triplett and
Tyler Napierala (Lebanon, Pa.) in the sixth gave the Bulldogs an 8-3 advantage.
Wingate plated four more runs in the eighth to go on top by nine. An RBI single from redshirt junior
Brandon Wolf (Charlotte, N.C.) started the scoring, while Godinez added an RBI single to make it 10-3. A
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) RBI groundout, followed by Brown's sacrifice fly put the Bulldogs on top 12-3.
Shippensburg scored twice in the ninth, getting a two-run homer from Allison to make the final margin 12-5.
Redshirt freshman right-hander
Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed a run on four hits in three innings of work, striking out two and walking one.
Mark Curtis took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed five runs on seven hits in four innings of work, striking out four and walking two.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Francis Marion for a 6 p.m. start.
