Wingate takes 17-8 decision over Young Harris Thursday

Young Harris, Ga.----Wingate University sophomore attack Tanner Kotch (Butler, Pa.) posted three goals and three assists as the Bulldogs earned a 17-8 NCAA Division II men's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Thursday afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field. Wingate is 4-4 overall with the non-conference victory, while Young Harris falls to 3-4 overall.
 
Five Bulldogs scored multiple goals Thursday. Wingate junior attack Ryan Vogrig (Vancouver, B.C.) had a team-best four goals and added one assist. Sophomore attack Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario) had three goals and two assists, while freshman attack Jeremy Sullivan (Crofton, Md.) added two goals and one assist. Senior midfield Cory Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) had two goals.
 
Both teams had nine extra-man opportunities. Wingate scored on six of its EMO chances, while Young Harris managed only two goals on its nine extra-man chances. Bulldog freshman midfield James Thatcher (East Patchogue, N.Y.) won 21-of-27 face-offs.
 
Wingate took the lead for good with five seconds left in the first quarter, when sophomore midfield Kevin Norman (Ocala, Fla.) scored on an assist from Kotch to make the score 4-3 Bulldogs. Norman's goal was part of a 6-0 Wingate run, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 advantage. Kotch finished the flurry on an unassisted goal with 12:04 remaining in the second quarter.
 
Wingate sophomore goalie Jacob Ormerod (Lake Mary, Fla.) earned his fourth victory of the season. In 50-plus minutes, he allowed seven goals and posted seven saves. Sophomore goalie Michael Connor (Stockport, England) played the final 9:48, giving up one goal and recording six saves.
 
The Bulldogs continue their stay in Georgia, traveling to Shorter University Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest. The YHC Mountain Lions begin a seven-game road swing with a neutral site game against Lynn (Fla.) Sunday in Marietta, Ga. The first face-off is slated for 1 p.m.
