Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader 11-6 at Anderson University, while the Trojans rallied for a 7-6 victory in game two to take the weekend SAC series. Anderson moves to 13-10 overall and 9-6 in the conference, while the Bulldogs move to 16-8 overall and 10-8 in the SAC.
Game One: Wingate 11, Anderson 6Senior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) was three-for-five with a homer, two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Junior outfielder
Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) went three-for-three with a homer, two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored, while seniors
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) each had two hits, and an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Travis Smith was one-for-two with two RBI to lead the Anderson attack.
LJ Newman had a double, RBI and two runs scored, while
Kyle Bailey went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.
Wingate got on the board in the second, doing all the damage with two outs. Cherry started the rally with a two-out single, then scored on a Krebs RBI double. Godinez followed with a single, while an error would allow Krebs to score, making it 2-0.
The Bulldogs plated five more runs in the third. Clark drove home the first run with an RBI double, while Cherry added an RBI single. The final three runs would score on an Anderson error to make it 7-0. Clark added an RBI double in the third to push the lead to eight.
Anderson scored three times in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to five. Smith started it with a two-run single, while
Stephen McKnight's RBI single made it 8-3.
Krebs stretched the lead back to six in the fifth, leading off the frame with a solo homer to left. RBI doubles from Newman and
Brett Cash in the bottom of the frame made it 9-5.
Wingate again had the answer, getting an RBI single from Godinez in the sixth to go back on top by five. Baileys' RBI single in the bottom of the frame got Anderson back within four at 10-6. Clark connected on a solo homer in the seventh to make the final margin 11-6.
Freshman left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-0. He allowed five runs on six hits in five innings of work, striking out six and walking four.
Cody Sheffield too the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed eight runs on eight hits in two innings, striking out two and walking two.
Anderson 7, Wingate 6The Bulldogs let another late lead slip away in game two, allowing three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth as a three-run lead disappeared. Wingate has held a lead in the final three innings in each of its last four SAC losses.
Smith was two-for-three with two RBI to lead the Anderson offense in game two, while Bailey added two hits and an RBI for the Trojans. McKnight, Cash and
Nick Bernardo each added an RBI and run scored.
Clark had a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack in game two. Spitz and sophomore infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) each added a double, RBI and two runs scored, while senior infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) added a double and RBI for the Bulldogs.
Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, getting an RBI double from Spitz and RBI groundout from Clark. Barnette drove home a run in the second to make it 3-0.
A Bernardo RBI double, followed by Bailey's RBI single got Anderson within one at 3-2 in the second. McKnight's RBI double in the fourth tied the game at three.
Wingate answered with a three-run fifth to regain the lead. Clark put Wingate back on top with an RBI double, while a Prince sacrifice fly made it 5-3. Cherry followed with an RBI single to stretch the Bulldog advantage to three.
Anderson responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie it. Cash started the scoring with an RBI double, while Smith's two-run double made it 6-6.
The Trojans scored another run in the sixth to take their first lead of the day. A hit batsman and error put a runner on second, while another error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Chris Ayers got the win, moving to 1-0. He tossed three shutout innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit. Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed three earned runs on five hits in three innings, striking out one and walking one.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Concord at 5 p.m.
