Greenwood, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs connected on three three-run homers and a two-run shot Wednesday night en route to a 12-10 victory at defending Southeast Region champion Lander University in NCAA Division II baseball action. Wingate improves to 18-8 overall, remaining unbeaten in non-conference action. Lander falls to 12-14 on the year.
Senior infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) went three-for-four with a homer and four RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Seniors
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) and
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) each added a homer and three RBI for the Bulldogs, while sophomore outfielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C) had a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.
Taylor Kellner had two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Lander attack.
John Mangum went three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored, while
Will Jones drove in a pair of runs.
Colby Luisgann,
Zach Giczewki, and
Matt White each added an RBI for the Bearcats.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Singles from sophomore infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) and Spitz put two on base for Clark, who connected on his fifth homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to put the Bulldogs on top by three.
The 'Dogs added to their lead in the second. Billings and Barnette reached ahead of Spitz, who connected on his league-best 10th homer of the season, a three-run shot to left center to make it 6-0.
White's RBI single in the second made it 6-1. Lander scored five more runs in the third to tie it. Kellner started the scoring with a two-run homer to right. Jones drove in a pair of runs while reaching on an error, while a double steal for the Bearcats tied the game at six.
Wingate regained the lead in the fifth, scoring five runs. Prince started the scoring with a three-run shot to left. Barnette added a two-run homer to left to make it 11-6. A Prince RBI single in the sixth put the Bulldogs on top by six.
Lander scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to three. The first run scored on a wild pitch, while a Mangum squeeze bunt and Luisgann RBI single made it 12-9. The Bearcats cut the lead to two in the eighth on a Giczewski RBI single.
Wingate sophomore right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) shut down the Bearcats in order in the ninth to preserve the win. Freshman right-haner
Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed one earned run on two hits in two innings, striking out two.
Erik Holton took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, falling to 0-1. Donahue notched his second save of the year.
Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game conference series against Mars Hill at 6 p.m.
