Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Saint Leo completes N.C. tour with 13-4 victory over Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----The Saint Leo University men's lacrosse team held Wingate University scoreless for two quarters en route to a 13-4 NCAA Division II triumph at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field Saturday. Wingate sophomore attack men Tanner Kotch (Butler, Pa.) and Austin Murphy (Orillia, Ontario) had two goals each for the hosts. Wingate is 6-5 overall and sees a five-game winning streak end. The Sunshine State Conference member Lions are 5-4 overall.

Wingate led 2-1 after the first quarter, as Kotch put the Bulldogs on the board with an unassisted goal at the 11:41 mark. SLU junior attack Matt Weller (Rosemount, Minn.) tied the score with 5:29 to go in the first frame. Murphy scored on a Kotch assist at the first quarter buzzer to put the hosts up 2-1.

Saint Leo would respond to Murphy's theatrics with an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach. Weller ended the explosion with an unassisted goal at the 8:08 plateau of the fourth quarter. Seven different Lions scored goals in the 11-0 flurry, led by freshman attack Jake Gilmour (Pickering, Ontario) and his three scores.

The Lions outshot the Bulldogs 39-31. In addition, Saint Leo had 41 ground balls compared to 29 for Wingate. SLU sophomore midfield Jake Kavanagh (Shoreham, N.Y.) won 14-of-18 face-offs for the visitors. The Lions converted three-of-six extra-man opportunities, while the Bulldogs came up dry on two EMO chances.

Wingate returns to South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday night, hosting Coker for a 7 p.m. league contest. Saint Leo entertains Adams State (Colo.) Tuesday at 7 p.m.
