Gaffney, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won the opening game of Sunday's NCAA Division II softball doubleheader 4-2 at Limestone College, while the Saints responded with a 10-0 victory in game two. Wingate moves to 16-10 on the season, while Limestone goes to 16-9 overall.
Game One: Wingate 4, Limestone 2Junior infielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) went two-for-four with two homers to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outfielder
Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored, while senior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) added two hits and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Helms started the game with her fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
Wingate added a pair of runs in the fourth. Smith plated Burrell with an RBI single, then scored on an error to make it 3-0.
Helms led off the fifth inning with another solo shot to left field to put the 'Dogs on top by four.
Limestone scored twice in the seventh to make the final margin 4-2.
Sydney Turner plated the first run with an RBI groundout, while
Camry Taylor's RBI single plated the second run of the frame.
Junior right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) got the win, moving to 10-7. She allowed one earned run on nine hits in seven innings of work, striking out five without walking a batter.
Courtney Smith took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings, falling to 3-5 on the year.
Game Two: Limestone 10, Wingate 2Emma Swearingen went three-for-three with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Limestone offense in game two.
Siara Shelton added a double and two RBI, while
Erika Hansen had an RBI and two runs scored for the Saints. Turner and
Sam Thornton each drove in a run in game two for Limestone.
Freshman
Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense in game two. Freshman outfielder
Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.) added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
RBI singles from Hansen and Swearingen gave the Saints a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Shelton's two-run double, along with a Wingate error put Limestone on top by five in the first.
The Saints added four more runs in the second. Swearingen started the scoring with an RBI single, while Thornton's RBI groundout made it 7-0. Turner added an RBI single to push the lead to nine. Swearingen added an RBI double in the third to give Limestone a 10-0 advantage.
Wingate got on the board in the fifth when Hannah connected on her second homer of the year, a two-run shot to left, making the final margin 10-2.
Josie Weber got the win, moving to 9-2. She allowed two runs on three hits in five innings of work, striking out four and walking two. Senior right-hander
Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in one-third of an inning, falling to 3-2.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
