Columbus, Ga.----The 13th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs dropped a pair of games on day two of the Cougar Classic Sunday afternoon in NCAA Division II softball action. Wingate dropped the first game 7-1 against Palm Beach Atlantic, while dropping the second game of the day 6-3 against Columbus State. The Bulldogs fall to 10-6 overall.

Junior catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) had an RBI for the Bulldogs, while junior infielder
Mellena Helms (Concord, N.C.) drew a pair of walks and scored a run.
The Sailfish came out hot, scoring five runs on four homers in the top of the first. Knight started the game with a homer, while Boggess added a two-run shot to make it 3-0. Butler followed with a solo shot to left, while Wood's long ball made it 5-0.
Wingate got on the board in the third when Helms drew a one-out walk, then went to third on a single from
Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.). A Laskey sacrifice fly made it 5-1.
PBA answered with two in the fourth, getting an RBI single from Knight and an RBI double from
Stephanie Garrels to make the final margin 7-1.
Rachel Hill got the win, moving to 6-0 by allowing a run on three hits in seven innings, striking out nine and walking four. Sophomore right-hander
Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) took the loss, falling to 3-1. She allowed five runs on four hits in one inning, striking out one and walking one.
Game Two: Columbus State 6, #13 Wingate 3Kailey Boone had a homer and four RBI to lead the Columbus State offense, while
Kristen Carr was two-for three with a homer for the Cougars.
Senior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) had a homer and two RBI for the Bulldogs, while Helms went three-for-three with a double and an RBI. Doran also had a hit and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
Columbus State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Carr provided the damage by connecting on a grand slam down the left field line. Carr added a solo shot in the third to put the Cougars on top by five.
Wingate got on the board in the fifth when Doran started the frame with a single, then scored on an RBI double from Helms. Burrell connected on a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 5-3. The Cougars answered in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch to make the final margin 6-3.
Carr got the win, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings, striking out three to move to 7-3.
Lindsey DeFee tossed a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Junior right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 6-5. She allowed five runs on four hits in three innings, striking out one and walking two.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to GRU Augusta for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
