Harrogate, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs plated 16 runs Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial University on the final day of the regular season in South Atlantic Conference softball action. Wingate won the first game 6-5, while taking the second game 10-3 to improve to 26-18 overall and 13-9 in the SAC. LMU falls to 22-22 overall and 11-11 in the conference. The Bulldogs finish the regular season in a tie for fourth place in the league standings.
Game One: Wingate 6, Lincoln Memorial 5Junior catcher
Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, N.C.) had two doubles and two RBI to lead the Wingate attack, while sophomore
Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) went two-for-two with a double and two RBI. Senior shortstop
Alexis Burrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was one-for-two with a homer and three runs scored, while sophomore infielder
Katie McLaurin (Laurinburg, N.C.) also drove in a run for the Bulldogs.
Meredith Johnson was two-for-four with a double and two RBI to lead the LMU attack, while
Emilee Solomon added an RBI and a run scored.
Ashlea Hunter was two-for-three with two RBI and a run scored for the Railsplitters.
Wingate got on the board in the fourth when Burrell led off the inning with her team-best 15th homer of the year, a solo shot to right center to make it 1-0.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the sixth. Burrell was intentionally walked to start the inning, then scored on Smith's RBI double.
Wingate took a 6-0 lead in the seventh. Laskey started the scoring with a two-run double to right center. McLaurin added a sacrifice fly, while Smith followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
The Railsplitters scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to make the final margin 6-5. Hunter started the scoring with a two-run double, while Solomon followed with an RBI single to make it a three-run game. Johnson added a two-run double to left center, making it 6-5. She was stranded at second as junior right-hander
Stacey Houser (Mooresville, N.C.) induced a game-ending foulout.
Houser picked up the win, moving to 18-13 on the year. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out two and walking four.
Samantha Smith took the loss, falling to 10-11. She allowed six runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work, striking out two and walking three.
Game Two: Wingate 10, Lincoln Memorial 3Eight different Bulldogs drove in at least a run in game two, while sophomore
Misty Doran (Century, Fla.) had two RBI and a run scored. Laskey had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while Helms added a double and two RBI. McLaurin was two-for-three with an RBI and three runs scored, while Burrell, freshman
Morgan Hendrix (Mocksville, N.C.) and junior
Emily Usiak (Matthews, N.C.) each added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
LMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A
Jennifer Moose RBI double plated the first run, while
Megan Tice added a two-run single to make it 3-0.
Wingate responded with four runs in the top of the second. A Burrell single and Usiak double was followed by a walk, loading the bases. Doran was hit by a pitch to plate the first run. Helms added a two-run double to tie it, while an RBI single from Hendrix put the 'Dogs on top 4-3.
Wingate added three more runs in the fifth. Hendrix started the inning with a single, stole second, then scored on another RBI double from Laskey. Usiak added a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. McLaurin followed with her fourth homer of the season, a solo shot left to put the 'Dogs on top by four.
Laskey led off the seventh inning with her fourth double of the day, then scored on an RBI single from Burrell. Smith added an RBI groundout, while Doran's RBI single made it 10-3.
Senior right-hander
Miranda Paul (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the win, improving to 5-3. She allowed three runs on just three hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking two.
Brianna Taylor took the loss, falling to 11-10. She allowed 10 runs on 12 hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking one.
Up next for the Bulldogs is the SAC Tournament. The full schedule will be released Sunday. The tournament begins Thursday and goes through Sunday. This year's SAC Tournament will take place in Hartsville, S.C. with Coker College serving as the host school.
