Due West, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs were shutout for just the second time this season Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 at Erskine College on the final day of the regular season. Erskine improves to 35-17 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 32-24.
Joey Wilson was two-for-four with an RBI to lead the Erskine attack.
Chris Moody added a pair of hits, while
Zach Smith also drove in a run for the Flying Fleet.
Senior infielder
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) was one-for-two with a double to lead the Wingate offense, while freshman
Brett Branton (Athens, Ga.) went one-for-one for the Bulldogs.
Erskine got on the board in the second.
Hanlon Maivelett reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, then scored on Wilson's RBI single.
The Flying Fleet added a run in the seventh.
Chase Watts was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly from Moody.
Austin Gambrell got the win, moving to 6-2. He tossed four shutout innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit.
Zach McAllister picked up his seventh save of the year, working a scoreless ninth inning. Redshirt freshman right-hander
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 3-6. He allowed a run on four hits in three innings, striking out four. Freshman left-hander
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) tossed two shutout innings with a strikeout for the Bulldogs.
Next up for Wingate is the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs will begin play in the NCAA Southeast Regionals on May 14.
