Greer, S.C.----The 23rd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs got a late goal from sophomore midfielder
Mateo Correa (Medellin, Colombia) to send Monday night's contest against Clayton State into overtime. The Bulldogs and Lakers played to a 1-1 double overtime draw in a NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate moves to 2-0-2 on the year, while Clayton State goes to 2-1-1 overall.
The Lakers got on the board in the 23rd minute.
Nick Hague headed home a pass from
Aleksi Tuominen to give CSU a 1-0 lead.
Wingate looked to be heading towards its first setback of the season, but with eight minutes left in regulation, Correa found the back of the net for the first time in his career. The sophomore took a cross from All-American forward
Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) and beat the keeper to make it 1-1, sending the match into overtime.
Each team took a shot in overtime. An attempt from senior midfielder
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) was saved by CSU keeper
Viltsu Tuumi. The Lakers had a chance late in the first overtime, but a shot from
Sekou Thornell was saved by senior midfielder
Gustavo Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to send the contest into a second overtime.
Gadsby again registered a shot on goal in the second overtime, but Tuumi was there for the save. The lone Clayton State shot of the final 10 minutes sailed high of target.
The Bulldogs finished the night with a 19-11 advantage in shots, holding an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. The Lakers had nine corner kicks on the night, while Wingate had eight corners. Freshman goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected three saves for the Bulldogs. Tuumi piled up seven saves for Clayton State.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, opening conference play at Mars Hill at 7:30 p.m.
