Ander’s late goal gives #19 Wingate 2-1 win over Anderson

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore forward Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) scored in the final five minutes of regulation Saturday night, giving the 19th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over visiting Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate improves to 4-0-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Anderson got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. A corner kick from Erik Dahlbeck into the box was re-directed by Andre Carle, who found Erik Dahlbeck right in front of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Trojans led 1-0 at halftime, with Wingate holding a 4-2 advantage in shots. Each team registered one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

The Bulldogs got the equalizer eight minutes into the second half. A lead pass found All-American forward Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) in the box. The reigning SAC Player of the Year was taken down by the Anderson goalkeeper, leading to a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) converted his second successful PK of the year, tying the contest 1-1.

Wingate took the lead with just less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Senior midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) sent a low cross into the right side of the box, where Ander took it off a short hop and chipped it over the keeper, putting the Bulldogs on top 2-1.

Wingate held a 16-9 advantage in shots on the night, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also held a 5-1 edge in corners. Freshman goalkeeper Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected four saves for the Bulldogs. Devon Ashy had five saves for the Trojans.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Queens at 7:30 p.m.
